Transparency needed in tuna industry

Administrator 01 Nov 2018 The Jakarta Post
This week, when conservationist from around the world gathered at the fifth annual Our Ocean Conference in Bali, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) untveilde a bold promisae and issued an even bolder challenge: full transparency in tuna fishing by 2023. In FSM, efforts are already underway to use this market position as a force for good. Fish like tuna are important global commodities, but the industry is in steep decline. By committing to full transparency and pushing private partners to do the same, FSM will send a powerful signal that sustainable gishing prectices are urgently needed to protect this crucial species. FSM already know that cooperation and conservation can reap big rewards. For example, since PNA-member states launched the Vessel Day Sceme in 2007 - which sets limits on fishing by foreign fleet - their annual tuna earnings have increased from about $60 million to more than $500 million. The Commitment to full transparency and the launch of a CDQ- type initiative for PNA states are intended to leep more tuna wealth in the Pacific. By promoting better, fishing practice, we can increase regional revenue flowes to rebuild and restore fisheries, boost food and job security, and strengthen resilience to climate change.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has requested a bilateral meeting with President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit (EAS) in Singapore in md-November after a plan to visit Jakart this year was scrapped because of overlapping schedules. Indonesian Ambassador to Russia M. Wahid Supriadi says both leaders would likely to discuss, among other things, enhanced economic cooperation after United States imposed tariff on Russian steel and aluminum. Moscow would likely focus on trade and the economy, as it had been looking for more opportunities with countries like Indonesia, adding that Russia would highlight its wheat exports to Indonesia, which increased by 600 percent in 2017, as well as meat and soybean. Indonesia, meanwhile, would request greater market access fot its fishery products as currently only 10 companies would export to Russia because of Moscow's standard requirement. Indonesia would also ask for greater market access for its agricultural product, in particular tropical fruits, as they were in high demand in Russia.

Coal minning companies are facing a dilemma in deciding whether to obey the mandatory requirement to supply 25% of production to the domestic market as recent data shows that absorption would remain low until year end. The government has set the target of national coal production at 465 million tons this year, 25 percent of which or 121.25 million tons, should be allocated for the domestic market. Ninety-two million tons of the target should be supplied to PLN, while the rest should go to industry, such as cement producer. however, data from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry shows that the realized allocation for PLN until September was only 66.9 million tons, or 72.7 percent of the target of the year
