Govts digs deeper into alleged nickel export irregularities

Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Panjaitan has backed Investment Coordinating Board's (BKPM) decision to temporarily stop nickel ore exports. He arguing the temporary export ban, which will last between one an two weeks, was necessary to give customs and excise officers, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) and the Navy time to investigate alleged violations. Luhut emphasized that the temporary ban was aimed only at disciplining the country's mineral ore exporters and was not intended to replace the initial plan to later on implement a permanent ban. This policy affecting the global market for the metal. The nickel price rose 1,2 percent to US$160.980 a ton on the London Metal Exchange on Monday.
